Röportajlar — Interview with DJ Zack Paylaş: WA 𝕏 f

Question: What do you use when composing your music?

Answer: There are 5 main things I use when making music. The first is my computer, and of course, this computer is quite functional 🙂
Secondly, there are various samplers that I've "borrowed" from the studio, sometimes using them as programs on my computer. For example, there's a really nice sampler made by a company called IDT; I'll give you the address so everyone can benefit: www.analogx.com :PP
Thirdly, I don't use sample CDs. Why don't I use them? Because everything is already there; what's important is the spirit, as they say.
The third element I use is music CDs. I collect melodies from all sorts of unexpected music CDs :)) Sometimes I take them as they are, sometimes I edit them. For example, "Hip-Hop Empire" was a 5-second sample taken from Zülfü Livaneli.
Fourthly, I use a pickup truck. It's a bit of a professional job, but believe me, using a pickup truck and mixing records isn't difficult; it just requires a bit of money. I have a Shure pickup truck, and I'm trying to do something with it until I can find 1200 marks.
Fifthly, I have an incredible musical soul. Maybe it's imitation, maybe it's sounds like they're directly plagiarized, but the important thing is to bring a different genre to Türkiye. Of course, professional bands like House of Pain or Cypress Hill exist in this field not just through music, but primarily through vocals, I think :)) and of course, they have a powerful force behind them like DJ Muggs….

Question: Of course, a sample...why a sample? Is it impossible without one?

Answer: I don't want to dismiss the questions with a single word like some pretentious people do. A sample, as the name suggests, is an example, something worth taking as a sample. However, the point is, even if you create a drum and bass melody yourself, it automatically becomes a sample. That's why I'm against this change. There are many people in this music industry who have lost themselves and criticize others because they haven't done anything themselves. You can use it too, brother, who's stopping you?

Question: How's your relationship with words?

Answer: I don't write lyrics, or even if I did, I wouldn't write them for myself 🙂 My vocals are terrible, and of course, I don't know what they'll be like in the future. Right now, I can only say that the MCs I work with are people whose pens are like swords 🙂

Question: What are your thoughts on the old school vs. new school debate?

Answer: I'm saying there's no point in dwelling on the past and ruining the future by discussing old school versus new school. Instead of having these kinds of nonsensical discussions, I want efforts to advance Turkish rap, to create higher quality, better, and more pleasing works. Let's not have anyone throwing insults at each other when there's nothing there. What's with this "I'm number one" argument?
Who's number one? Where is who? Whose cassette sold millions?
I'm not even including a group with amazing content like Cartel in this statement. Instead of ignoring the things said about us like "hip-hop & rap – they're all clowns – breakdancers are just street sweepers" and fighting amongst ourselves, we need to show people that this is a culture. Because this music, its dance, and its people are all part of a culture. Please, let's put aside these old-school, new-school debates, this person did this, that person did that...

Question: Who do you listen to, both in Turkish and foreign languages?

Answer: Actually, partly due to my job, I've listened to almost every artist and group imaginable, but when it comes to real rap and hip-hop, I have an incredible fondness for Latin groups.
Bands like Delinquent Habits, Cypress Hill, and House of Pain are truly incredible; I can't go any lower on the list. I just think these are a few of the leading bands in this genre. Otherwise, if I were to give you a list, there would be over 500 bands and solo albums... but in my opinion, Cypress Hill is still the father of this genre.

Question: What does it take to become a good DJ?

Answer: I don't know what to do to become a good DJ :))

Why? Because I'm not a very good DJ, because I haven't had many big concerts yet, I haven't signed autographs, I haven't thrown records to the audience, you know :))

But I can say this: it's not good, but at least you shouldn't be pretentious to be a DJ. There's something a nice friend of mine said: "Does being a DJ mean using a turntable?" Oh my, what a nice saying, heheh, but what's the connection??

DJ stands for disc jockey. Whether this disc is made of petroleum or titanium doesn't make a difference :))

DJs are the ones who get people excited and liven things up. God is a DJ... A DJ knows what people want and how they want to have fun in their environment. Otherwise, someone might be using a turntable on my turntable but isn't a DJ, how's that going to work? Hehe... Anyway... If a DJ wants to build a bright future, they must struggle with hardship like me, create themselves from scratch, and I'm absolutely certain a DJ must think about those around them first, not themselves...

Question: Finally, what else would you like to say?

Answer: To summarize what I want to say under one roof 😛 I do this job with love and I will continue to do so. Let whoever wants to think whatever they want. I make my music, perform it, and leave. Whether they boo me or come with glasses of tequila to congratulate me, it doesn't matter. Ultimately, I am myself, and I am striving for those involved in MC & breakdance, nothing more. Majesty, thank you very much for asking me such challenging questions in this interview. Your site is great, I hope it will be useful for you and the hip-hop & rap community :)) I send my love to all the rapper b-boys in Izmir… Duman, C-Side Bastardz (Göçmen, Tetik, Hook), I-C, Yener (Kuva-i Izmir), Spider b-boy group, and my very dear friend Saylo, who is currently in the army and, in my opinion, the number one b-boy classic. I kiss them all on the eyes…

And the Biggest Greetings? To the Coast!
